‘The Outsiders’ was named best musical, while the 70s-set play ‘Stereophonic’ brought home five awards.
Best known for his portrayal of Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe has now made his mark in theater by winning his first Tony Award at this weekend’s ceremony in New York. The 34-year-old actor took home the Best Actor award in a Musical for his role in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, which earned a total of three awards.
Jonathan Groff also celebrated his first Tony win, taking home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in the same musical as Radcliffe. Previously, Groff was nominated for his roles as King George III in Hamilton and Melchior Gabor in Spring Awakening.
Angelina Jolie, the acclaimed actress and filmmaker, joined the ranks of first-time Tony winners as a producer of The Outsiders, which was named Best Musical. The production received 12 nominations and won three awards during the 77th Annual Tony Awards.
Additionally, first-time Tony winners included Succession actor Jeremy Strong and Sarah Paulson, who is now halfway to achieving EGOT status.
