Sharing is caring!

Directed by Oscar and BAFTA winner Asif Kapadia, the feature-length documentary captures the last 12 days of the icon’s career.

Such exciting news for fans and tennis enthusiasts worldwide! Prime Video has officially given the green light to a feature documentary capturing the last 12 days of Roger Federer’s professional tennis career. This means we will now have the chance to witness the iconic moments leading up to the icon’s retirement.

The yet-to-be-titled documentary is in the capable hands of director Asif Kapadia, an Oscar and BAFTA winner renowned for his work on films like Amy (2015), Senna (2010), The Warrior (2001), and Diego Maradona (2019). Co-directing alongside him is content producer Jose Sabia, known for his work on Vogue’s 73 Questions digital series.

What We Know So Far About Roger Federer’s Documentary

To recall, Federer retired from tennis after the 2022 Laver Cup—and now he’s joining the league of sports icons such as David Beckham, Lionel Messi, Pelé, Diego Maradona, Andy Murray, and others who’ve shared their journeys through documentaries.

The documentary, set for release on Amazon Prime Video, was initially intended as a private record, capturing Federer in his most unguarded moments. Yet, as the footage unfolded, capturing powerful and emotive scenes, it organically transformed into a profoundly personal journey that Federer thought was worth sharing with others.

In the words of the tennis global icon: “Initially, the idea was to capture the final moments of my professional tennis career so that I could have it later on to show my family and friends. During my career, I tended to shy away from having cameras around me and my family, especially during important moments. But I didn’t see the harm in shooting this as it was never intended for the public. However, we captured so many powerful moments, and it transformed into a deeply personal journey.”

In this documentary, Federer grants filmmakers access to his hotel room and even to his house. In addition, his wife, for the first time in over a decade, also participated in an interview. Beyond these intimate moments, the feature-length film goes further, offering exclusive interviews with some of Federer’s closest rivals and friends, including tennis stars Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray.

Although there’s no official release date yet for Prime Video’s documentary, reports suggest it’s expected to be available around July, coinciding with the Wimbledon Open. To note, this Grand Slam tournament is where Roger Federer holds the record (eight) for the most singles titles.

Are you excited to delve deep into Roger Federer’s final moments on the court? Stay tuned for more updates.
