The much-anticipated film of the legendary musician is set for release this December.
Guess our favorite chocolatier and desert messiah is taking a quick break from his usual fantastical characters as he brings to life one of America’s greatest songwriters: Bob Dylan. In the recently released trailer for A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet channels the iconic musician with an uncanny resemblance and captivating presence.
Directed by James Mangold, the filmmaker behind the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, the film chronicles Dylan’s rise from a 19-year-old Minnesota musician to a worldwide sensation. Set in New York in the early 1960s, the trailer offers a glimpse into Dylan’s transformative journey, featuring his anti-war anthem A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall from the 1963 album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.
Here’s What We Know So Far About the Upcoming Bob Dylan Biopic
Based on Elijah Wald’s 2015 book, Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties, the film revisits the night Dylan shocked audiences at the Newport Folk Festival with his rock single Like a Rolling Stone. This bold performance marked a pivotal moment in music history, signaling the end of the folk revival and establishing Dylan’s musical independence.
In this movie, filmmaker James Mangold describes Dylan as “a wanderer who comes in from Minnesota with a fresh name and a fresh outlook on life.” The real-life Dylan, now 83, even contributed to the project, providing notes on the script and meeting with Mangold to ensure authenticity.
Given the film’s strong musical roots, the internet was divided about whether Timothée Chalamet was the right fit for the role. However, fans of the actor know this isn’t his first musical venture. Chalamet recently starred in Wonka, showcasing his singing talent in seven musical numbers, including the viral hits Pure Imagination and World of Your Own. He also attended Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and sang in the 2019 romcom A Rainy Day in New York.
Joining Chalamet is a star-studded cast, including Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, P.J. Byrne as Harold Leventhal, Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, and Will Harrison as Bob Neuwirth.
Along with Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold producing the film are Fred Berger, Alex Heineman, Peter Jaysen, Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, and Jeff Rosen. A Complete Unknown is set to hit theaters in the US in December and in the UK in January. Are you ready to dive deep into the life of the man behind classics like Heaven’s Door, Like A Rolling Stone, and A Hard Rain’s A‐Gonna Fall?
