On top of world-class museums and art spaces, there is also a wealth of street art and iconic murals that can simply inspire your imagination and creative thinking skills.
Singapore Art Hunt: Best Street Art
Prepare your cameras. Here are the best street art graffiti and murals in Singapore:
- Little India
Little India has been Singapore’s cultural vanguard. Its walking trail exudes Singapore’s diverse history – not only found in the bustling streets and shops but most particularly across its wonderfully created murals.
Starting from Hindoo Road, you’ll get a chance to meet face-to-face Tamil film superstar, Rajinikanth, a mural painted by ZERO (Mohamed Zulkaernaen) as a tribute to the Indian community and migrant workers thriving in the area. Then around the corner, there’s Alive @ CLIVE – a vibrant destination depicted by the multicolored traditional dancers on blue walls. Down Clive Street, you’ll see the mural of a girl in a traditional scarf. Moving forward, you’ll also get to witness Kathaka by Didier Jaba Mathieu, Traditional Trades of Little India by Psyfool, Cattle 2 by Eunice Lim, and The Winding Jasmine Flowers by Nadiah Alsagoff.
- Katong
While most of Singapore’s tourist sites are found in the downtown heritage areas, the strong presence of the blended culture of the intermarriage of indigenous Malays with nomadic Chinese and Indonesians, Peranakan, can be much appreciated if you head east: to Tanjong Katong. Here you will see the eclectic mural of Nicia Lam, Yullis Lam, Novena Angela, and Valerie Neo, titled “Medley Alley”. True to its name, this alley resembles the dynamic metamorphosis between generations as represented by the bright and cheery yellow walls that are covered with tile mosaics on both sides which take the form of a pair of wings. Reflecting the diversity of the area, these tiles are the Majolica tiles that can be found in old shophouses in Singapore that speak so much of the Peranakan culture.
- Aliwal Street
Another vibrant piece of wall art that you should not miss is the one next to the side alley entrance of Aliwal Arts Centre. This mural hotspot serves ever-changing artworks – like the alpha batik piece with loop colors is such a breathtaking piece made possible by the creative hands and minds of Singaporean artist Slacsatu in 2019 as part of the Aliwal Urban Arts Festival.
- Haji Lane
While Blu Jaz Café is a renowned destination among jazz artists and music aficionados, Haji Lane where it is tucked also hosts a number of colorful murals that adorn the front of the shops, cafes, and bars located in this glam district. Idris Johor (also known as Pff (Prettyfreakyfantasy) makes all these surreal fantasy murals.
- Everton
Aside from the wonderful fusion of food, coffee, and Asian snacks, there’s another reason why people just love taking a walk in the little enclave of Everton Park: the beautiful nostalgic murals that speak of the simplicity of life. Made by the Singaporean muralist, Yip Yew Chong, these murals perfectly capture life in the Lion City in the early 70s and 80s – like the mural of an elderly woman doing the laundry and the colorful clothing items hanging above her and that picturesque laidback scene of chickens followed by their chicks, cat sleeping, and a cabinet filled with kitchen utensils and dining essentials.
- Bali Lane and Ophir Road
If you want to really see a space that is legally dedicated to street art, Bali Lane and Ophir Road would be the best places to go for an art hunt. It can be recalled that in 2019, this alley held the first outdoor gallery, Gelam Gallery. Here you can find murals scaling up to an impressive 230-meter that are created by Singapore’s best artists, like ZERO, ANTZ, and Jaba Mathieu.
So, what are you waiting for? Style up and get ready to take IG-worthy photographs of yourself with these colorful murals in the background. Unleash your creativity and be inspired by these street art murals found in the alleys and corners of Singapore.
