Aside from international events going on in full swing, there are numerous events, exhibitions, and showcases in Singapore that you will surely enjoy if you are an art enthusiast or simply adore art activities.

Mark your calendars as your schedule may get filled up with creative activities lined up this July 2022. Here we have curated a list of art events and exhibitions that will feed your longing for creative activities. Hopefully, these will keep you inspired to pursue what your heart truly desires — or finally finish that artwork that has been long labeled as “work-in-progress”.

Things to Do in Singapore this July 2022: Art Events and Exhibitions

Whether you’re into traditional or contemporary, photography, creative films, or simply love gallery visits, Singapore’s got you covered. Here are the art events that you can attend this July.

  1. Superfluous Things: Paper (until August 14)

Origami lover? Be enthralled by the wonderful display of paper artwork at the Superfluous Things: Paper Exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum. Covering various themes such as sustainability, the exhibit showcases five magnificent masterpieces crafted by nine different artists. The exhibit includes a colorful display of an imaginary world map, “Land of Fairy Tales”, and 80 miniature artworks that are smaller than your hands, “Just a Little at a Time”. Ignite the child in you with the astounding displays at SAM in Tanjong Pagar Distripark now!

Rates: Free for Singapore citizens and children under 6 years of age.

Standard Rate: $5 for students and senior citizens; $10 for adults

Operating Hours: 10 am – 7 pm daily

  1. Batik Kita: Dressing in Port Cities (until October 2)

To honor the shared heritage of Southeast Asian countries, ACM presents Batik Kita: Dressing in Port Cities. This exhibit features over 100 pieces of exquisite batik textile that cut across culture and ethnic backgrounds from overseas and local lenders – as well as some rarely seen pieces from the National Collection. This cultural exhibit also showcases how batikers have adapted and evolved through the times with this age-old craft.

Rates: Singaporean and Permanent Residents ($12)

Standard Rate: Foreign Residents and Tourists ($25) – this already covers an all-access admission to ACM (Asian Civilization Museum)

Operating Hours: 10am – 7pm (daily); 10am – 9pm (Fridays)

  1.  Art ‘R’ Us by Aikbeng Chia (until August 24)

Want to see the creative process behind the scene? Check out Aikbeng Chia’s exhibition at the Leica Galerie Singapore. Art ‘R’ Us highlights the BTS of 12 homegrown artists who have been significant contributors to Singapore’s blossoming creative landscape. Take a glimpse of how visual artists like Sam Lo, tattoo artist Shane Tan, and many other creative geniuses work.

  1. Broken White Project: Tropenwelle (until July 31)

Initiated by Yogyakarta-based artists-run Ace House Collective, Mizuma Gallery presents the Broken White Project: Tropenwelle—an exhibition that highlights the works of eight Indonesian artists that centers on dialogues related to the creation of ideas and masterpieces. The Singaporean art scene is envisioned in this exhibition as one of the key supports of current Asian contemporary art. Exhibitors include Dian Suci Rahmawati, Meliantha Muliawan, Prihatmoko Moki, Restu Ratnaningtyas, Riono Tanggul Nusantoro, Rudy ‘Atjeh’ Dharmawan, Widi Pangestu, and Wisnu Auri.

  1. Painting with Light (until July 24)

If you are more of a visual storyteller, then the National Gallery Singapore’s well-loved annual festival of international films on art is something that you should never miss! For the fifth time, Painting with Lights returns to the Gallery with over 50 heart-warming shorts and award-winning feature-length films—which are created by artists who embrace ideas relating to indigeneity, modernity, class relations, and other factors affecting the current social structure. For this year’s festival, there are more in-gallery screenings and artist talks expected to happen to bring the audience closer to the realities of society.
