Nope, Wednesday won’t be leaving the streaming giant despite Amazon acquiring Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 2021.
It’s officially confirmed: Wednesday is returning for a second season on Netflix. The hit coming-of-age supernatural horror-comedy series based on the Wednesday Addams character of the Addams Family instantly became a fan-favorite after scoring 400 million hours in one week, beating out Stranger Things.
As the streamer puts it: “Wednesday holds the record for the most hours viewed in a week for an English-language TV series.†As if that was not enough, the show broke another record by becoming the second most popular English-language series on Netflix to have reached a billion viewing hours in less than a month! Three weeks, to be exact.
The series, starring Jenna Ortega, became such an overnight hit that fans have been clamoring for a second season right after binge-watching the eight-episode series. However, speculations began to rise, and rumors about Wednesday jumping over to Amazon spread like wildfire after learning that Amazon acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 2021.
Demystifying all assumptions, Netflix made an official statement and finally confirmed that Wednesday is renewed for Season 2. Through a mashup of clips from the first season, Netflix posted a teaser that chimes with a mystical message that goes: “Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hunted, haunted, and mimicked millions of times across the internet. It’s been pure torture. Honestly, I wish I cared a little more.â€
While Amazon acquired MGM, Netflix’s deal was already on paper long before the acquisition. Hence, this MGM content won’t be made exclusive to Prime Video.
For the second season of the global phenomenon, Netflix promises that more mystery is coming. In a statement made by creators, showrunners, and executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to Tudum, they’ve shared that: “It’s been incredible to create a show that has connected with people across the world. Thrilled to continue Wednesday’s tortuous journey into season two, we can’t wait to dive headfirst into another season and explore the kooky-spooky world of Nevermore. Just need to make sure Wednesday hasn’t emptied the pool first.â€
Here’s What We Know So Far About Wednesday Season 2
Obviously, Wednesday series won’t be such a major hit without the impactful acting (and epic dancing) of Jenna Ortega. Hence, it is safe to assume that she will be reprising her role as Wednesday Addams in the second season.
While the release date for Wednesday Season 2 is not yet available, it is most likely that production on the second season will start soon. Also, with so many plots to explore, most of the cast of the series can be expected to make a return, including Emma Myers (Enid), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia Addams), Luis Guzmán (Gomez Addams), Fred Armisen (Uncle Fester), Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley), Percy Hynes White (Xavier), Hunter Doohan (Tyler), Joy Sunday (Bianca), Christina Ricci (Marilyn Thornhill/Laurel Gates), and Georgie Farmer (Ajax).
Before the first season of the Wednesday series ended, Wednesday received a creepy text message telling her that threats remain out there for both her and the school—and that not all loose ends have been tied up neatly as she thinks they have. Thus, it would be exciting to unveil what else could be there aside from the Hyde.If you’re as invested as we are, stay tuned for more updates about Wednesday. Truly, there’s no telling what else could happen in the next season.
