Sharing is caring!

Singaporean artist and model Ruth Isabelle d’Almeida brings forward her advocacy towards environmental sustainability as she represents Singapore for the 2021 Miss Earth pageant.

The twenty-year-old Fine Arts student hopes to bring awareness and inspire more people to take action towards the environmental crisis and challenges, such as climate change, in consonance with the beauty pageant’s cause and responsibility.

Behind the Glitz and Glamour

Ruth comes from a culturally diversified family – often called “rojak”, pertaining to the popular Javanese fruit and vegetable salad dish. Her father is a Singaporean of Portuguese-Italian descent while her mother is a Filipina with Spanish-Chinese ancestry.

At present, she is taking her bachelor’s degree at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. She specializes in printmaking and mastering techniques like silkscreen and intaglio printing.

With her charm, grace, and talent, it may be easy to get swayed by Ruth’s confidence. But the young beauty queen also admits that she’s very introverted and at times gets dejected with criticism. Nonetheless, she takes courage in rising through challenges by putting herself out there. She did a bit of acting in secondary school before getting into her modeling career. She continues to bravely step out of her comfort zone and allows herself to push her limits.

Beauty in Sustainability

While Ruth’s interest in pageantry began with modeling and the fun it brought to her, such motivation eventually evolved into a deeper connection towards the environment. Now, she hopes to bring light to everyone and encourage people to learn how to live more sustainably in their own little ways.

“You can do something as small as switching off the lights when they’re not in use. Recycling unwanted newspaper or scratch paper. You can even turn them into new paper. [In addition], one of the [eco-friendly] simple ways you could start off is to address food wastage. You can try to finish the food that you have. If you can’t finish it, you bring it home and save it for later.”

With the growing interest of the younger generation towards pageantry, through her platform, Ruth aims to amplify the message that: little things can make great change. She also reminds people of her age, Generation Z, to not take life too seriously. “Always take things with a pinch of salt and a smile.”
