Enter Dante’s world of lifelong vendetta against malevolent demons.
Wahoo! The long wait is over for fans who have been patiently waiting for the release of Netflix’s anime adaptation of Devil May Cry since the first announcement made in 2018 by Capcom, Studio Mir, and Netflix’s Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar.
During the explosive Drop 01 showcase, Netflix set the stage ablaze by unveiling a killer teaser for the Devil May Cry anime adaptation. The teaser, featuring the iconic demon hunter Dante, left audiences electrified and hungry for more as it offered a heart-pounding glimpse into the adrenaline-fueled world of the upcoming series.
Unleashing the Devil: A Gritty Preview of the ‘Devil May Cry’ Anime Adaptation
For those who aren’t steeped in the world of gaming, Devil May Cry stands as a monumental achievement in the action game genre, birthed by Capcom in 2001. It chronicles the escapades of Dante, a sharp-shooting, pizza-devouring devil hunter whose allegiance to safeguarding the world from demons hinges on the size of his paycheck.
As per the official game synopsis: “Meet Dante: a half-human, half-demon, hunter for hire, and carefree owner of the Devil May Cry agency. A mysterious woman named Trish approaches him one day with news of the king of the underworld making a grand return from banishment to wreak havoc on the world. Brandishing his father’s sword, Force Edge, and trusty guns, Ebony and Ivory, he sets out to defeat the demon king, the one responsible for the death of his family.â€
The 44-second teaser of Devil May Cry features Dante with a devilish grin, effortlessly flipping through the frame while discharging rounds from his iconic pistols, Ebony and Ivory. He then lets out a “wahoo†sound, like in the games, before making the final cut.
While the teaser remains cryptic about the storyline, the creatives behind this animated series are nothing short of legendary. Crafted by the same visionary minds responsible for The Legend of Korra and The Boondocks Season 4 at Studio Mir and masterfully overseen by the indomitable Adi Shankar, the show undoubtedly rests in capable, artistic hands.
Additionally, in an interview made in 2021, Shankar revealed that Vergil and Lady will also be part of the eight-episode show—and probably in the upcoming seasons, if there will be. “I’m honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the [Devil May Cry] franchise. Alex Larsen and I love these characters; we are part of the fandom, and we vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves.â€
To date, this is not the first adaptation of the Devil May Cry game series. In 2007, Madhouse released a 12-episode TV series that focused on Dante’s life as a demon hunter. This was later released by Funimation on a home video. Not only that, the game series was such a hit that it also inspired novels, manga, and even stageplay crossovers in 2019.
Netflix has not provided the official release date yet, but as the flames of anticipation continue to burn, it’s only a matter of time before we witness the devilish delight of this anime adaptation, promising a thrilling journey through the demon-infested world of Devil May Cry.
As Dante puts it: “Let’s rock, baby!â€
