Fans get a closer look into the private life of the multi-awarded singer-songwriter—including the behind-the-scenes of the creation of his biggest hits and the universal themes that inspire his songs.
This May, before the release of his newest album, Disney+ will be releasing the four-part docuseries, Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All, which will allow fans to get to know deeper the ginger head who has transformed the landscape of today’s music industry.
The series will highlight the success story of Ed Sheeran—of how a child with a stutter rose to fame and made chart-topping songs. Delving deep into his music, The Sum of It All will also tackle the difficulties faced by the artist, including the loss of a dear friend and other life setbacks.
Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All is produced by the Emmy-winning producers, Fulwell 73 Productions—the creatives behind Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium, Adele: One Night Only, and the Grammy Awards. It is slated for global release on May 3, days prior to the official release of the singer-songwriter’s upcoming sixth album, “−”, (also known as Subtract), on May 5.
The lead single of the album, titled Eyes Closed, is scheduled to arrive on the 24th of March. The much-anticipated record is the final installment of Ed Sheeran’s mathematical album era, which began with Plus (+) in 2011, followed by Multiply (X) in 2014, Divide (÷) in 2017, and Equals (=) in 2021.
Here’s What We Know So Far About Ed Sheeran: The Sum Of it All
The docuseries is divided into four parts: Love, Loss, Balance, and Life. Such was to inspire, both fans and audience, not only to get to know Ed Sheeran but also to pursue grander dreams and remain passionate about what makes them feel alive.
As Ed Sheeran puts it: “I’ve always been very guarded in my personal and private life; the only documentary I’ve ever made has been one that focused on my songwriting. Disney approached me to make a four-part documentary on the making of my next album, Subtract. Initially, the documentary was just that, a documentary on the formation of the album. But, as my life took a few twists and turns, the subject matter of the album changed, and so did the documentary. It became completely different from what I thought it would be. I wanted to provide context to the album as it touches on very personally things, that we all experience. I knew if I made a documentary, I would want to put my trust in the hands of the director, so it wouldn’t be sculpted by me, and was actually an accurate reflection of who I am, even if it’s uncomfortable to watch. I felt like the right time to open the door and let people in. I hope people enjoy it.”
Disney’s official description of the documentary series reads as follows: “Ed Sheeran: #TheSumOfItAll, a four-part original docuseries, is streaming May 3 on #DisneyPlus. For the first time ever, global superstar, Ed Sheeran opens the doors to a definitive and searingly honest view into his private life as he explores the universal themes that inspire his music. This series follows Ed after he learns of life changing news and reveals his hardships and triumphs during the most challenging period of his life. This original 4-part series features exclusive footage behind his iconic hits, a never-before-seen personal archive with his friends and family, and epic stadium performances giving insight into Ed’s world. In each episode, Ed faces themes and emotions that most people experience. Ed expresses his deeper thoughts as he reassesses life and explores what he thinks of the world, of himself, and how this difficult time has influenced him and his new music.”
Directed by David Soutar, the show unveils the man behind the renowned hits—an entirely different person who has been through the literal ups and downs of life. The official trailer released also gave a glimpse of the battles faced by Ed, including the loss of his dear friend, Jamal Edwards, and the struggles of his wife, Cherry Seaborn, who was diagnosed with a tumor while pregnant.
Before the release of the album and the documentary series, the five-time BRIT Award winner will continue with his scheduled concerts in the UK and Europe in the latter part of this month.
