While the sequel to the 2018 film, Crazy Rich Asians, is at work, a spinoff based on the story of Astrid Young Teo and her romance with Charlie Wu will be the highlight of an upcoming original movie developed by Warner Bros.
The creators behind the success of the multi-awarded contemporary romantic comedy movie, Crazy Rich Asians, have heard you. Yes, they will be making a special movie intended for Astrid and her budding romance.
Aside from Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) and Peik Lin Goh (Awkwafina), Astrid Young Teo (Gemma Chan) easily captured the hearts of the audience because of her endearing role – known for her beauty, impeccable sense of fashion, wealth, kindness, and passion which were unfortunately reciprocated by heartbreak when she was painfully cheated on by her husband.
What’s the Plot of this Crazy Rich Asians Spinoff?
While the sequel to the Crazy Rich Asians would focus on Rachel and Nick’s trip to Shanghai to find Rachel’s biological father, the spinoff – which is still based on the same book authored by Kevin Kwan, China Rich Girlfriend – would be covering Astrid and Charlie’s relationship.
Charlie is Astrid’s first love but because of Charlie’s humble family background, the two were forced to break up – with Astrid ending up with Michael (Pierre Png) whom we have known in the first installment to have been having an affair. In the final moments of the Crazy Rich Asians, Charlie and Astrid were seen to be reunited after not seeing each for years during Nick and Rachel’s engagement party. Following the book, the spinoff may dwell on the marital problems faced by both Astrid and Charlie and how they will fight for their love which was previously hindered by their social status – and now with the current situations that they are in.
Because of the overlapping plots of Crazy Rich Asians’ sequel and spinoff, there’s a possibility of Constance Wu making a cameo in the spinoff. But this is to be confirmed yet.
Crazy Rich Asians Spinoff: What Else You Need to Know
Emmy nominated producer for Outstanding Comedy series and writer, Jason Kim, will be penning the screenplay of the Crazy Rich Asians starring Gemma Chan and Harry Shum. Along with them, Chu, Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, and Brad Simpson, as well as SK Global’s John Penotti, are set to back the project as producers. As per the report, Kim initially pitched the idea of this spinoff to Warner Bros., who instantly fell for the idea of having a separate arc for Astrid.
Currently, Kim is producing Michelle Zauner’s movie adaptation of the novel Crying in H Mart together with Stacey Sher for Orion. He is also developing a project with Scooter Braun and Tablo for Amazon and a half-hour series with Blue Marble Pictures and American independent entertainment company, A24. This fall, his original KPOP will be making its way to Broadway – making history as the first Broadway musical featuring the culture of Korea and the popularity of the K-pop musical genre at present. Kim previously worked as consulting producer of the HBO series, Divorce, and Netflix’s original series, Love. Aside from being nominated for Emmys, he also won the Writers Guild Award for Best Comedy Series for Barry in 2020.
