The National Museum of Singapore invites you to experience Amazônia, a powerful exhibition by renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado, opening on November 22, 2024. This immersive showcase sheds light on the Amazon rainforest’s beauty and the urgent need for its preservation amid environmental threats. Known for capturing humanity’s bond with nature, Salgado’s work offers visitors a rare look into the world’s largest tropical rainforest, from its sprawling landscapes to the rich cultural heritage of its Indigenous peoples.
A Multisensory Encounter with the Amazon
Curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, Amazônia brings together over 200 striking photographs, alongside a specially crafted soundtrack by Jean-Michel Jarre. The exhibition features two projection rooms, video testimonies from Indigenous leaders, and tactile image plates, making it accessible to visually impaired visitors. From intense portraits of Amazonian communities to sweeping forest vistas, each photograph is a testament to the Amazon’s raw beauty and the urgency of conservation efforts. “Amazônia demonstrates the majesty of the Amazon while calling for global protection of ‘the lungs of the world,’†the exhibition notes.
For those interested in conservation and reforestation, the exhibit also highlights Instituto Terra, the non-profit founded by Sebastião and Lélia Salgado to spearhead reforestation initiatives in Brazil.
