‘Baby Reindeer’ is Probably the Most Disturbing Stalker Series You’ll See on Netflix

Sharing is caring!

This mini-series is not for the faint of heart.

While it’s fascinating to watch Joe Goldberg go all-stalker mode in the hit series You, his mix of charm and danger, coupled with a delusional belief in his noble intentions, starkly illustrates the grim reality of his actions: being stalked is a harrowing ordeal. This harsh truth is vividly explored in Netflix’s new eerie drama, Baby Reindeer.

While the title may sound like a cheerful Christmas movie, this seven-part mini-series is anything but cute. Adapted from Richard Gadd’s one-man show at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival, the series dramatizes his creepy encounters with a stalker and powerful abusers. With a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series has climbed Netflix’s charts, captivating audiences with its intense and unsettling narrative.

Here’s Everything You Need to Know About ‘Baby Reindeer’

Released earlier this month, Baby Reindeer is a psychological thriller drama starring its writer and producer, Richard Gadd. He plays Donny, a struggling comedian whose life spirals out of control due to a series of disturbing events—from being relentlessly pursued by a serial stalker named Martha to facing workplace bullying and confronting his past of grooming and manipulation by an abuser, ending up in a dark descent into obsession and self-loathing.

As it tackles the grim realities of stalking and sexual abuse, the series might be difficult to watch for some viewers. Centered on just two characters—the middle-aged woman, Martha, and the bartender aspiring to be a comedian, Donny—the series unflinchingly explores the emotional truth of these harrowing experiences, reflecting real-life ordeals that are often hidden behind closed doors.

The series is so gripping and eerie that audiences are left eagerly anticipating what will happen next. The ending has sparked such curiosity that many viewers have turned to social media to try to uncover the real identities behind the story. This has led to issues, prompting actress Jessica Gunning to urge fans to refrain from such detective work, as false allegations have begun to circulate. “If you like the show and you are a fan of it, you should stick with the story of Martha and Donny being what connects you, not trying to do any detective work and find out any real identities.”

This plea comes in the wake of Sean Foley, an Olivier Award-winning actor, writer, and director—and friend of creator Richard Gadd—being mistakenly accused of being Darrien, a character who grooms and sexually assaults Donny in the series.

Given the sensitive nature of the Baby Reindeer, Netflix has taken extensive measures to protect the identities of the real individuals involved by using pseudonyms for the characters. Writer and actor Richard Gadd has also urged fans to avoid speculating about the real-life identities behind the story. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be. That’s not the point of our show,” he posted on Instagram.

Yes, despite its sensitive and potentially triggering themes, Baby Reindeer is a story that still needs to be told. It provides an honest and thorough examination of the complex emotions and relationships that survivors often endure, which resonate throughout their lives.

If you’re up for a gripping emotional ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat, then Baby Reindeer is your next must-watch. This series pulls no punches as it explores the haunting repercussions of stalking and abuse, all wrapped up in a compelling narrative that’s as real as it gets.

Get ready for a perfect binge-watch session but be warned—it’s intense!
