Sharing is caring!

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard has finally made its way to Singapore, and with Sarah Brightman taking on the legendary role of Norma Desmond, expectations were set high. Fortunately, this production delivers a spectacle that is both visually mesmerizing and emotionally gripping, making it a must-see for theatergoers of all backgrounds.

A Masterclass in Visual Storytelling

One of the most striking aspects of this Sunset Boulevard adaptation is its immersive use of light projection. Every detail, from the subtle movement of curtain drapes to the atmospheric glow of street lamps and an evening sky backdrop, adds an incredible depth to each scene. The lighting design isn’t just an accessory—it plays an integral role in shaping the emotional landscape of the show, making every moment feel alive and cinematic.

The set design of Norma Desmond’s house is particularly intriguing. Its eerie, gothic aesthetic immediately sets a foreboding tone, subtly hinting at the tragic downfall awaiting the characters. For those unfamiliar with the story, the haunting ambiance alone is enough to spark curiosity—something is clearly amiss, and the house itself almost acts as a character foreshadowing the dark events to come.

Stellar Performances That Command Attention

While Sarah Brightman’s portrayal of Norma Desmond is undeniably the centerpiece of this production, there are standout performances across the board. Tim Draxl (Joe Gillis) brings a dynamic energy to his role, balancing charm and desperation with finesse. However, one of the biggest revelations of the night is Ashleigh Rubenach as Betty. Her voice carries remarkable clarity and depth, delivering every lyric with heartfelt precision. She brings to mind the talent of Broadway greats like Rachelle Ann Go (Hamilton) and the legendary Lea Salonga.

The final 15 minutes of the show are particularly intense—emotionally charged and filled with suspense, revelations, and gripping drama. The conclusion is executed with precision, leaving audiences in awe as the curtain falls. It’s a theatrical masterclass in storytelling, where every moment builds towards a climax that resonates long after the show ends.

With only a limited three-week run at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands, Sunset Boulevard is an experience that theater lovers won’t want to miss. Whether you’re a fan of opera, musical theatre, or simply a captivating story told through breathtaking visuals and stellar performances, this production is a must-see event of the year.
