Robert Pattinson is ‘Mickey’ in Bong Joon Ho’s Dark Comedy—And It’s as Wild as You’d Expect

Life after death has never been this bizarre and mind-bending.

At some point, you’ve probably wondered what it would feel like to die—and then be born again. Well, Bong Joon Ho, the brilliant mind behind Parasite, is ready to take you there in his latest film, dropping on January 29, 2025. In this dark comedy, Mickey 17, the concept of death gets a bizarre yet oddly fascinating twist.

Robert Pattinson stars as multiple versions of Mickey Barnes, a disposable employee who dies over and over, only to have his body regenerated, memories mostly intact. As the trailer teases, “Every time you die, we learn something new—and humanity moves forward.”

Here’s Everything You Need to Know About ‘Mickey 17’

The first trailer for Mickey 17, dropped by Warner Bros., gives us a wild taste of Robert Pattinson’s latest role. It kicks off with his character, Mickey Barnes, casually working outside a spaceship—until his hand gets sliced off. But instead of a panic-fueled, bloody mess, there’s a surprising twist: Mickey is an “expendable.”

In this dystopian dark comedy, nothing’s going right on Earth, so Mickey signs up to be an expendable—without really reading the fine print (classic mistake). Every time he dies, scientists regenerate his body with most of his memories intact, sending him off on one dangerous mission after another. From falling through ice and being incinerated to getting crushed by alien creatures, Mickey’s life (and deaths) are an ongoing experiment in how far he can be pushed.

But just when you think it couldn’t get weirder, Mickey stumbles upon another version of himself, making him one of the “multiples.” Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey 7, the film has been delayed to January 29, 2025, due to the Hollywood strikes and post-production delays.

The cast is stacked, featuring Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette. After Bong Joon Ho’s genre-shattering success with Parasite, fans are eager to see how he’ll blend his signature dark humor and brutal storytelling in Mickey 17. This also marks Pattinson’s return to the big screen after his Batman stint, and it’s shaping up to be a mind-bending ride.

If you’re a fan of the twisted storytelling in Black Mirror or the chaos of What Happened to Monday, this movie should definitely be on your radar. Mark your calendars for January 29 (a day after its premiere in South Korea), and get ready to see if the movie can tickle your mind. See you at the theaters!
