Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield Navigate the Ups and Downs of Love in ‘We Live in Time’

Ready to bawl your eyes out? Well, Academy Award nominees Andrew Garfield (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Florence Pugh (Oppenheimer) are set to test their rom-com chops in their first movie together, the upcoming John Crowley (Brooklyn) film, We Live in Time.

A24 recently released the first trailer for the pair’s upcoming romance, which is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and hit theaters in a limited release on October 11. The film, to be distributed by A24 for US audiences, was secured during the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 after the Paris-based film production and distribution company, StudioCanal, finalized the deal to sell the movie.

Here’s What We Know So Far About Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield’s ‘We Live in Time’

Of all the meet-cutes, We Live in Time features one for the books. Here we see Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh) finding love after she accidentally runs him over with her car. The trailer captures snapshots of their lives together—from falling in love to becoming a family, having a child, and living blissfully until the most devastating moment occurs: Almut’s terminal illness.

The film furthers into Almut’s journey, marked by scenes of her buzz cut and confronting what seems to be inevitable. “I’m not interested in a treatment that accidentally wastes our time,” she declares. Yet later on, when Tobias asks why she’s taking the risk, Almut responds, “I can’t bear the thought of being forgotten.”

The trailer leaves viewers with a glimpse of “serious” talk between the couple and their daughter, hinting at the emotional depth of the film. Despite the fun nature of the film, the trailer suggests a heartbreaking conclusion, so viewers should come prepared with tissues. (Is this another film where we see Garfield losing a blonde lover?)

Helmed by Benedict Cumberbatch as executive producer via his company SunnyMarch, alongside Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, and Guy Heeley, and written by Nick Payne (The Last Letter from Your Lover), the film promises an emotional rollercoaster ride that will captivate audiences.
