Following the events that happened during the Cannes Festival, the celebration held to recognize the artistic achievements in the art and influence of movies concluded with the most anticipated part: the Palme d’Or Awards Ceremony—where Justine Triet’s Anatomy of A Fall emerged victorious, securing the most coveted award.

Presented by Jane Fonda, Justine Triet became the third female director to have won its top prize—to which was seized as an opportunity to protest the French government’s austerity programs, which include major cuts to cultural programs and pension reforms. The French murder-mystery film director and screenwriter highlighted that: “This award is dedicated to all the young women directors and all the young male directors: All those who cannot manage to shoot films today. We must give them space, the space I occupied 15 years ago in a less-hostile world, where it was still possible to make mistakes and to start again.”

American actress and activist Jane Fonda also remarked, “There were no women directors competing at that time [referring to how Cannes evolved since she first attended], and it never even occurred to us that there was something wrong with that. We’ve come a long way.”
