Introducing featured artists/bands –
Los Van Van is one of the leading musical groups of post-revolutionary Cuba. It was founded in 1969 by bassist Juan Formell, who directed the band until his death in 2014. Formell and former band members Changuito and Pupy are some of the most important figures in contemporary Cuban music.
Using a charanga line-up (flute, string instruments, and rhythm section) as its base, Los Van Van added trombones, and was the first Cuban group to use synthesizers and drum machines. Initially, their sound was a fusion of son montuno, rumba, and North American rock and pop. Later the band incorporated funk, disco, and hip hop, as well as salsa. These influences would first give rise to a style known as songo, and later timba. Los Van Van has consistently managed to adapt its style to the times, and remains Cuba’s most popular dance band.
Led by pianist and musical director Rafael Ithier, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico is one of Puerto Ricos greatest dance bands. Four decades after their inception, the 13-piece salsa group continues to inspire dancers with its horn-punctuated Latin rhythms and lush vocal harmonies. Officially named Ambassadors of Our Music by the Puerto Rican Senate, El Gran Combos many hits include such classics as El Menu and Timbalero. Their 1978 album, En Las Vegas, sold more than one million copies, while its follow-up, In Alaska: Breaking the Ice, was nominated for a Grammy. A longtime member of popular Latin band Cortijo y Su Combo, Ithier formed El Gran Combo in 1962 with eight of his bandmates, including percussionist, dancer, chorus singer, and salsa bandleader Roberto Roena.
Romeo Santos (born July 21, 1981), is one of the most influential Bachata stars in the world, and one of today’s most influential voices in Latin music. A former member of the group Aventura and a leading artist of the Urban Bachata movement, Romeo Santos has played a major role in transforming this traditional Dominican genre into a mainstream phenomenon
